[too much to quote completely, and there really is nothing to cut, so please refer to Diane's post, because otherwise the listbot will get me]
Diane,
I was responding to a request for a wish list. In my experience, an editor who understands the modern linguistic concept of grammar (the language as she is spoke) but who was never taught the old-fashioned Grammarian version of grammar runs into occasional snags. (The other day a list member who edits for a living ran up against some confusion around how to use the subjunctive mood correctly, for example.)
That does not mean (a) that only people over 50 who had battle-axes in junior high school can be editors or that (b) my wish list has anything to do with whether you can be a good editor. It just means that I think people who master the ins and outs of grammatical terminology and parsing at an impressionable age have an easier time of it. Personal opinion, nothing more.
