NUMPAGES field not working in Word

Does anyone have experience with the Word NUMPAGES field working onscreen but not in the printed document? Pages print as page 1 of 1, page 2 of 2, etc. More details:

* We are working in Word 2000 on Win98 workstations, printing to several different printers.

* Selecting or clearing the the Update Fields check box (in the Tools|Options|Print tab) has no effect.

* The problem occurs in both the header and the footer, whether or not the field is located in a table.
