Like Barb and David, I have never had a problem indexing in Word. When I have had questions, the Word Help really did _help_.

I have never seen a perfect manual, so yours may be the first one in the history of our profession. :-) But I have indexed a number of them in the 100- to 150-page range. With these larger manuals, I find that almost all of my index marks are in the heading paragraphs. Having had some practice at it, I usually need 3-4 hours to create and edit index marks in a document that size.

Make sure you view hidden text while you're editing your index marks, and note that the index mark should always default to the style of the paragraph it's in. If it doesn't, then the index itself will look hinky.
