The thing to remember is that it's the *extra* applied formatting--formatting that's not part of the paragraph style--that gets carried into the index (assuming you use the Mergeformat option, of course).

To see what I mean, let's assume your Normal and Index 1 paragraph styles are defined with Times New Roman as the font.

1. Create a small .doc file with three Normal paragraphs and
three fields, like this:

{ XE "monospace text" }¶
{ XE "monospace paragraph" }¶
{ INDEX }¶

2. Select just the quoted text in the first paragraph, and
set the font to Courier New.

3. Define a paragraph style with Courier New font.

4. Apply the new paragraph style to the second paragraph.

5. Press Ctrl+A; then press F9 to generate the index.

Note that the "monospace paragraph" entry is in Times New Roman, but the "monospace text" entry is in Courier New.
