I was unemployed for 5 months (2 periods of 10 weeks each) last year, which seemed like forever but now I realize it was a relatively short span of time.

Some tips:

I subscribe to all the major job boards (Monster, Dice, JobSeeker, Flipdog, etc, etc);

Good idea, but be sure to check these boards daily, even two or more times a day for large boards such as monster. You never know when a new job will be posted.

I also maintain a weekly correspondence with several recruiters in the area ...

Another good idea. And never "blow off" a recruiter. The same recruiter who offered me an interview for a job at a disgustingly low wage called me back a month later with my current job. If I had not been nice to him the first time, I may never have gotten the contract.

Try to keep touch with recruiters from many agencies, not just one or two. It is common in the Seattle area to only think of Volt since they place a lot of people at Microsoft, but my current company only hires through Adecco Technical.

How much rejection is that? Every time I am rejected for a job, I try to look at the reason for the rejection. Do I need to improve my resume? My interview skills? Do I need to brush up on a new technology or old tool? There are lots of "Dummies" books out there; reading one should tell you enough in a few hours to make it through an interview intelligently.

I've been known to wallpaper with "Don't call us, we'll call you" letters and postcards. But, I never gave up. I always keep a positive attitude, and eventually found the perfect job for me.
