"Have you been fired? Was it the best or worst thing that ever happened?"
I wasn't actually fired, but I could see it coming. Back in 2000, I was
one of two technical writers responsible for user manuals for a small
company. They had a "reorganization" and "promoted" me to marketing. I had
a private office, but literally nothing to do. After two weeks, I started
looking for another job. By the time I started hearing rumblings of more
"reorganization," I already had an offer of $12,000. more than I was
currently making, and a signing bonus (I had thought only engineers got
those). I jumped on the offer before they changed their minds, and three
years later, I'm still here. I've gotten three raises, and they are
completely financing my graduate degree.
