I don't know anything about other universities, but at the two
universities I attended, engineers and science majors were usually
given completely different English courses than those taken by arts
majors.  As it was explained to me, 'engineers didn't need to know much
about English, so they only needed a basic English course so they could
pass.'

I always thought that was a terrible shame, and probably wronged a lot of
engineers.  If a course is made too easy, too 'basic', it can be pretty
darn boring and dry.  With thinking like this behind their education, it's
no wonder so many engineers I know have a problem putting word to paper.
