So, essentially you have a interview specific portfolio. You tailor the
examples "portfolio" you bring to meet the needs of the company. For me
that's really what a portfolio should be. You don't want to take the same
one to each company. You have to do your homework and determine what
samples of your work will help facilitate discussion about the needs of this
future employer.
I agree with Bill that What you write " a commentary" about the piece is
just as important as the article itself. Knowing the example inside out
allows you to converse with the interviewer about how you can help there
company and it gives them an idea of what you are capable of doing.

You do have to show them some point of reference, but
a "prtfolio" is a very vanilla means of going about
it.
I don't put myself on a pedestal. I also don't walk in
empty-handed. I just don't tote a portfolio around. I
prepare specific examples, which may or may not be
former work samples, based on their needs and my
thoughts as to what I can deliver for them.
If you were hiring an interior designer, would you be
more impressed by one that came in and showed you
samples of all the houses they did in the past, or
someone who contacts you ahead of time, finds out what
you are looking for, and then brings a few patterns
and preliminary texture samples to discuss in the
context of your home and your disposition?
