Re: Humor(?): Font fondlers, rejoice!--a brief rant
I mean, does black ink have a persona if I choose to
use it on black paper--or vice versa--or is the choice
just a bad one? It's like wearing a thong and halter
top at your knighting ceremony at Buckingham Palace.
It's not about the persona of the thong.
Isn't that just quibbling over words? Whether you call it a persona or use a different term, the fact remains that each font conveys a certain impression, completely independent of the content encoded.
This is the reason why ad agencies tend to spend significant amounts of time choosing the right font for a particular product campaign: It contributes to setting the mood, whether the reader/viewer realizes it or not.
How relevant this is for tech writing is another matter. Normally, I expect to get the font from the CI, so there is no need to know about the subtle details. Then again, sometimes tech writers have to set up templates from scratch, in which case it could be useful to know what expectations different fonts create in the readers.
This is certainly not a core issue, but if you aim for a high standard, you have to pay attention to the details as well.
Regards
Jan Henning
