Actually, "engineers are lousy writers" was something I
heard a lot of as a beginning engineer, though I soon
came to suspect that it was mostly because they didn't
like to and just didn't try very hard. Back then, I was
often told what a rare skillset I had as an engineer
because I was a good writer. These days, I am often told
what a rare skillset I have as a writer because I have an
engineering background...

Not so much that they could or couldn't write, but

And I suspect it's still true that no matter how well
some engineers or programmers or developers (or other
people who employ writers) write, most of them would
still rather someone else did it.
