And now I think about it, that is the answer to the original question on
this thread. What is the motivation for being a technical writer?

It's being a maven.

If you're a maven, you're a maven. It in the blood.

Being a technical writer is a way to get paid for being a maven. That, I
suspect, is the motivation in a nutshell. If you are not a maven, you
probably won't last in this occupation.
