Funny how employers had no problem lowering the
immigration requirements when they needed to fill
slots. I wonder what's taking them so long now to
lower the security requirements? </sarcasm>
Given that new clearances are apparently not
available, private companies have no choice but to
require current clearances. But as a taxpayer and a
reluctant fiscal conservative, I'd want more
clearances issued so market forces can bring down the
rates taxpayers are paying for defense-related work.
Given recent revelations about the defense buildup, it
wouldn't surprise me if it turns out later that the
supply of security clearances is being deliberately
manipulated to keep the defense-sector job boom within
the current defense and intelligence community (read:
old-boy network).
I suspect that among the tech writing jobs requiring
security clearance, there are a lot of jobs requiring
military experience and domain knowledge that most of
us will never have. But there are probably also a lot
of software/IT tech writing jobs that are otherwise
identical to jobs the rest of us have.
Actually I don't know how many new clearances are
being issued. The number is probably classified :-) I
know... you'd tell me but then you'd have to kill me,
etc.
