Unlike your old instructor, I wouldn't recommend a
semicolon there. I think it is a fine place for a
full stop, to indicate that the first action finishes
and many leisurely nanoseconds go by before the second
action begins.
On the other hand, maybe that's why I'm not a
technical-writing instructor...
