I have always believed that if one is going to a job interview, one ought to
look one's best. That means that I would always go to an interview in a suit
and tie, unless the employer for whom I was interviewing told me that it was
not necessary to wear a suit and tie to the interview. Then I would come to
the interview in business-casual.
This only applies to North America and Western Europe. In Israel, where I
lived for 4 1/2 years, it was not recommended to go to job interviews in
suit and tie. There, it was perfectly acceptable and even expected to come
to the interview in business-casual. It all depends on the culture.
