I completely agree on the value of UML and RUP (Rational Unified Process) in general. I've gotten very interesting, high profile projects (including leading the design of a customer service department and enhancing company wide communication lines (efficiency) because of my knowledge and experience with RUP.
It's a great skill set you can use to extend yourself beyond the more common technical writer duties. It's also helped me, as Goober Writer suggested, more adeptly learn C++ and software architecture in general.
