Well, as you stated, there are many definitions of
what a business analyst is. But, the main attribute
I've seen is the ability to understand a product and
its impact on and reaction to the people who use it.
Basically, the role makes sure that there is a
saleable reason why a product exists and works along
with product managers to ensure the marketability of
the product. The tech writer tie-in is product
knowledge and proper address of audience.

Again, that's from my experience with BAs. YMMV.
