To be fair, I think (memory fades about such details) that the University of
Washington was a land grant university as well. Aren't most state
universities, especially in the midwest and west?

Yep. It was a land grant. And the university still owns a lot of the premium land downtown Seattle, such as the Four Seasons Olympic Hotel. An easy way to get money into your coffers...
