This is very common. I have never worked anywhere but that at least one other department asked for some of the stellar stuff that can be produced.
My immediate response has always been, "Please clear that with my boss Jo Schmoe. I am working on a priority project for her right now, but if she is willing to put that off, I'm sure I can help you."
That keeps her in the driver's seat, and you out of any conflict.
The other alternative is to say, "Well, If it can be done in an hour or so, I could probably spend a little time at home or after-hours working on your project, but I'll need to clear it with Jo first."
NEVER do work for anyone else at the company behind your boss' back. Even if it is just an hour or so as a favor during your lundh breaks, your boss may object violently. (speaking from experience)

"I wanted to start this thread a few weeks ago when I first encountered
this problem, but for one reason or another did not. I was curious how
many other people have found themselves in my position. I currently work
in what is called the Operations department, but recently found myself
doing some documentation for the Marketing department. I am in the
Operations department and their respective budget. Working outside of
the Operations department but still getting paid essentially by the
Operations department cause a small amount of friction. I should note
that the Marketing department does not have their own tech writer.
Anyway, I was curious how many of you are in a similar situation as
myself and have been approached by other departments within your company wanting you to do some work for them.
