Access might be a good solution in your case. The Memo datatype holds up to
65,535 characters (under most circumstances), and the OLE datatype can hold
huge freakin' 1GB objects from other OLE-enabled applications (like many
word processing and DTP tools). Access also exports XML nicely (including,
if you like, an XSLT and the data schema).

With several concurrant users, Access will crap out before a larger database
solution, so it might not scale up to meet your needs. In the early stages,
though -- why not?
