OTTAWA -- A Canadian-backed program to teach students
in Angola to recognize and avoid land mines appears to
have had the opposite effect, says a newly released
study. "Children who had received the school program
were ... more likely to say they had entered a mined
area than were those in the same schools who did not
have the program," says the report, obtained under the
Access to Information Act.
"Children who had received the program were
consistently less likely to recognize high-risk mine
sites depicted in the guidebook." . . .
Teaching materials were found to be ineffective, with
too many words and too few pictures.
