Amen to that, Sean. This is not the first time a "Microsoft security
patch" worm has made the rounds on the internet. According to Symantec,
there was a similar worm going around in February, and I remember seeing
statements all over the news saying "Microsoft does NOT send patches as
email attachments." Usually I don't fall into the blame-the-user camp,
but this is one instance where I do. We're tech writers, we should know
better.
I've gotten hit with over 200 of these things, several of them with long
lists of Techwrl addresses buried in the headers. I figure it will
eventually die out. For now, I've set up some new Outlook rules that
look for "Microsoft" or "MS" in the "From" line (forged, of course) or
any of several phrases in the subject line, including
bug letter
critical update
microsoft upgrade
security patch
failure notice . . .
For people like me who can't or won't change their email addresses (work
email, in my case), Outlook rules are your friend.
