TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I've been hit with the same boatloads of viruses everyone else has been
complaining about--in fact, my network admin just came to ask me whether the
techwr-l software itself has been infected (probably not), given that I've
received more than 400 of the viruses over the past couple days--most, but
not all, filtered out by our antivirus and anti-spam software. The most
alarming is that a few EXE files have somehow slipped through.
Apparently, the problem is that someone's written a new worm that can
harvest e-mail addresses from Usenet servers (NNTP servers), and given that
techwr-l is echoed on Usenet, this is likely the source of the problem. The
bad news is that until someone figures out how to clean and protect the
Usenet servers, there's not much that can be done about this; unsubscribing
from techwr-l won't help once your address has been harvested. Changing your
address means you won't receive any new mail, but the downside of this is
that your old address will keep receiving the virus.
For details, have a look at: http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_100662.htm
The actual details of the NNTP problem are skimpy, but appear at the bottom.
Haven't gone spelunking on other sites such as CERT, but I'm sure there's
more details there.
