TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
- Set your TECHWR-L account to NOMAIL. Read through the web or newsgroup.
- Use good AV software. Norton, McAfee, Sophos, Trend - all work very well.
- Use an antispam program or feature, and delete all emails with .exe, .bat,
.vb?, .com, ...and so forth.
- Use a Yahoo/Hotmail or other free account for TECHWR-L.
- Keep your system patched. http:\\windowsupdate.microsoft.com
- If you're more technically inclined or at a business, get some kind of SMTP
proxy with spam filtering. I use a WatchGuard firewall with an SMTP proxy at my
office and an outsourced anti-spam service (Frontbridge). However, we resell
these products and services, so we kind of have to use them. Incidentally,
Frontbridge totally rocks. We've been selling it for about a month now and my
customers LOVE it.
While I realize these worms and such are annoying. There are plenty of easy
ways to stop them when you apply common sense and good old logic.
/!\ NOTICE: Bitching, whining, complaining, throwing a tantrum, blaming India,
dreaming up conspiracies, spreading FUD, annoying the list owner, and demanding
the universe switch to Linux have all been proven to be completely ineffective
at stopping worms, viruses, and hackers. /!\
