It's very much possible to author an application for the web that functions like any other application.

True, but

Horsefeathers.

I made the original statement about making a web app that functions just like an existing desktop app, and I wasn't talking about making the web-based app *look* exactly the same, and I certainly wasn't talking about using the same the underlying code or even the same technology.

I was talking about designing a web app to *function* (again, from the user's point of view) just like an existing desktop app. Most importantly, that means the flow of work through the software is the same. Additionally, buttons, fields, windows, and the like have the same names; list boxes offer the same selections; radio buttons and checkboxes offer the same alternatives; and so on.

If you decide your next version needs to be web-based, but your users highly value their knowledge of the existing UI:
1. There's no reason why you couldn't make it work the same.
2. There's no reason why you shouldn't make it work the same.
3. There's no reason why it wouldn't work in any modern browser.

Sheesh.
