Sometimes scrupulously following an employer's timekeeping rules
can result in behavior that feels unethical.
For example, although my employer's timekeeping system is
nominally in "hours," exempt employees are to record sick and
vacation time only in full-day increments. If an exempt employee
works AT ALL on a given day, they are considered to have
worked a full day. (This is supposedly because of a longstanding
but only recently enforced U.S. government regulation.) This
rule is so counterintuitive that many employees refused to
follow it until it was enforced by our online timekeeping system.
(Note for non-US readers: "exempt" = salaried and exempt from
for overtime pay regulations; "non-exempt" = paid by the hour)
