Dan the technical writer strolled around the art fair, searching for
something to spruce up his apartment's blank walls.
He saw some semi-interesting photographs, but was stunned to learn that
the
cheapest one was $800. Fascinated, he checked the price on a photograph
he
hated - it was $1300. "Figures," he snorted.
He continued to walk around, trying to think of what he actually wanted to
adorn his living room.
He spied an art patron carrying a laptop. It was then that he got an
idea.
He thought of SnagIt, the leading screen capture software. As a technical
writer, he used SnagIt every day in his job. With it, he could capture an
exact copy of anything that appeared on his Windows screen, edit and
annotate, and send the capture directly to the printer, a file, an e-mail
or
the Web. He didn't have to spend time cropping, fussing around between
programs - nothing. In fact, he couldn't remember how he did his job
without it.
He returned home and used SnagIt to capture the SnagIt icon off the
TechSmith Web site. He then used SnagIt to capture a few menus and some
freehand images off interesting sites. He then used SnagIt Studio to
create
a collage. Finally satisfied, he framed his creation and put it on
display.
"You want a conversation piece?" Dan said to his wall. "I'll GIVE you a
conversation piece."
He sat back, imagining the comments his SnagIt art would inspire. He
could
hardly wait to invite everyone from work.

ANNOUNCE: Rockley's "Information Modeling & Structured Writing" in
Seattle!
***********************************************
SEATTLE -- ³Information Modeling and Structured Writing²
November 15-16, 2003 Ann Rockley, The Rockley Group
***********************************************
The Rockley Group, Inc., presents ³Information Modeling and Structured
Writing², a two-day workshop, November 15-16, 2003 in Seattle. The
workshop, held at the University of Washington, is designed for
writers, editors, publishers, information architects, software
developers, IT and business managers who need to understand the
concepts, methods, strategies and changes involved in moving to a
single source environment.
Information modeling and structured writing are key components of any
successful unified content (single source) strategy. Information
models formalize the structure of your content, providing the
framework upon which a unified content strategy is based. The success
of your content management system is dependent on the quality of both
your information models and your ability to author and manage reusable
content. Structured writing provides a standard for creating reusable
content. Consistently structured content is reusable content.
Together, information modeling and structured writing assure
consistent structure.
This workshop will introduce you to the concepts of information
modeling and structured writing, and explore their relationship to a
unified content strategy. Numerous real-life examples will be used
throughout.
You will learn:
. Why adopting a unified content strategy makes good business sense
. How information models relate to content management
· How to create information models and how to conduct top-level and
in-depth information analysis
· The different types of reuse and how to select the best reuse
approach
. How to build element models, structural and content reuse maps
· The role metadata plays in content reuse and how to effectively
develop a strategy for managing it
· The difference between structured and unstructured content and the
pro¹s and con¹s of using both
. How to harness the power of structured writing to create content
appropriate for reuse
. How to author content that meets the requirements of a model
. How to support and maintain your models
· How to select appropriate authoring tools or work within the
limitations of the tools you have today
· How to work with and without a content management system
· How to understand and address content delivery issues, including the
selection of publishing tools
Cost - Registration for this two-day workshop is $825.00 US per
student. Register two or more students from the same organization and
get a $100 discount per student.
Learning materials, lunch, snacks, and a copy of our new book on
content management, ³Managing Enterprise Content: A Unified Content
Strategy,² are included in the registration fee.
