As a newbie to single-sourcing, I highly recommend Bill's article on the
ANZAC Ship Project. While it may be a little above the level of a PHB (which
none of *us* have, of course), it's an excellent introduction for writers,
SMEs, and their managers.
Thanks, Bill!

Subject: RE: Single-sourcing, who's doing it?
We've been doing SGML single-sourcing since 2000 in a content management
environment (http://www.teratext.com). See my Technical Communication
article about what we did for the ANZAC Ship Project - http://www.tenix.com/PDFLibrary/91.pdf that explains the problems we
solved and the basis for the solution. This gives us hull specific
maintenance procedures for each of the 10 ships belonging to two
different navies (http://www.tenix.com/Main.asp?ID=29). Document
maintenance for engineering changes across the 10 ships is basically a
part-time job for one person.
Given the success of the ANZAC solution we are currently implementing an
integration of the current version of TeraText with the eMatrix PDM
environment (http://www.matrixone.com/matrixonesolutions/index.html) for
managing documentation relating to our project to rebuild as-new 350
M113 light armoured vehicles (the ones with tracks - with seven major
variants (http://www.tenix.com/Main.asp?ID=437&ListID=15) and a number
of mission kits) for the Australian Army. This will give us the ability
to deliver hull-specific documentation for any variant from the common
manual structure.
In time, I expect we will have a fully generic implementation of the
content management environment that will allow us to use it as the basis
for all our projects, large and small.
