I used to buy and sell on half.com extensively when I was in college and
shortly after. I have also bought quite a few things from Amazon's UK
site. It is insane that I can order a book or a CD from London and have
it shipped to the US and have the process be anywhere from 1 buck or two
cheaper to double-digits than if I have ordered from Amazon's US site or
any other US company.
It was towards the end of my college days that the bookstore at my
satellite campus began not to publish a book list because so many people
were going in, recording the ISBNs from the binder and then ordering the
books elsewhere. It didn't matter, because then we just walked through
the shelves, found the book and recorded the ISBN anyway. I saved close
to a grand by NOT buying books at the bookstore.
Considering tuition costs have risen an average of 40% at state schools,
I do not see how the college bookstores can whine about losing business.
But this is just my opinion.
