I was not asking you for sympathy.
At first, I was asking for help. Which I got. Thanks to everyone for your suggestions.
And thanks also for those who DID express sympathy. It is really depressing to feel let down by a tool that you depend upon. So I was grateful to those who empathized with my situation.
Afterwards, I was asking Adobe to rise to this occasion.
It emphatically HAS BEEN the case, since 5.5.6 at least, that Save As PDF yielded unpredictable results. That is, it has been -- at least four years now, when doing the reasonable thing, the thing that the FM GUI would have you do, was not what had to be done to generate PDFs.
I, like every other experienced FM user, have just -- done what I had learned to do to generate PDFs -- for years now. And I put up with it because the results were so much nicer than the results I got with other tools.
This week, I ended up with results that were totally unacceptable and did not reflect the huge amount of work I'd put into getting the document done.

And that's been the case for me from the time I learned to Print to Distiller (NOT from the manual, of course, but from Dov's exhortations on the Framers list) until last Monday at 5 a.m.
I hope your luck holds. And, if it doesn't, just remember, Word is not so bad. It just takes some getting used to. Sigh.
