The graduate-level Technical Communication class at the University of
Colorado-Denver is conducting an anonymous survey of technical
communicators. The purpose of the survey is to understand technical
communicators' career development. The Technical Communication class will
collect, analyze, and report the survey responses in order to improve
understanding of the skills, knowledge, and experiences needed for entry
into the technical communication profession. We invite your response to this
survey at
<http://ouray.cudenver.edu/~dl3marti/surveysite/survey.html>.
The survey should take you 5-10 minutes to complete.

This rest of this message explains basic information about . . .
- what you will be asked in the survey,
- what risks and benefits arise from this study,
- how your confidentiality will be protected,
- how you can access and fill out the survey,
- the consent procedure for your participation in this study,
- how you can get further information about your role in this study.

TECHNICAL WRITING EMPLOYMENT SURVEY
The survey asks about your technical writing career and about factors that
may have influenced your career, such as your education, skills and
knowledge, and social influences. Your answers to these questions can help
us understand how technical writing careers can be developed.

RISKS AND BENEFITS
Since the survey is conducted through the Web, and since the survey does not
ask for specific identifying information, your participation in the survey
presents few risks. The main identifiable risk would be if your survey
responses remained on your Web browser or in your Web cache, visible to
others who have access to your computer. To alleviate this risk, after you
have submitted the survey, return to the survey page and click the "Erase
Survey" button.
As for the study's benefits, we hope that students, their instructors, and
others to whom we can disseminate our findings may better understand how
technical writing careers develop.

YOUR CONFIDENTIALITY
This survey is for an academic-based research project with no commercial
affiliations. To best ensure your confidentiality, the survey does not ask
for your name or your e-mail address or other specific identifying
information.

ACCESSING THE SURVEY
You can access the survey at
<http://ouray.cudenver.edu/~dl3marti/surveysite/survey.html>. Completing the
survey will take 5-10 minutes. Your participation is entirely voluntary, and
you may opt to withdraw at any time.

YOUR CONSENT
This e-mail message constitutes a consent notice for your participation in
this study. If you choose to fill out the Technical Writing Employment
Survey, print a copy of this consent notice for your records.
