Problem opening PDF after being attached to Lotus Notes email
Subject:Problem opening PDF after being attached to Lotus Notes email From:Dick Margulis <margulis -at- fiam -dot- net> To:"TECHWR-L" <techwr-l -at- lists -dot- raycomm -dot- com> Date:Tue, 04 Nov 2003 06:52:15 -0500
I am having trouble with PDFs I'm creating that a customer cannot open.
Here are the details:
I am running Acrobat 5.0.5. These particular documents are generated
from PDFMaker, coming out of Word. I have Distiller set for 3.0
compatibility. All fonts are embedded (subsetted). After distilling, the
documents open with bookmarks visible. In Acrobat, I turn on standard
security, selecting only the option to prevent users from changing the
document. (They can open it without a password, copy text and graphics,
print, and annotate.) I then do a Save As to generate the final PDF.
I then attach the PDF to an outgoing Outlook message and send it to a
colleague (on our system) who is able to open the PDF with no problem.
She then forwards it to the customer, who is on a Lotus Notes system.
All of us are on Windows client machines, and the customer has Reader 5.0.5.
When the customer attempts to open the file, he gets a message box that
says (he dictated all this to me on the phone, so please forgive
transcription errors):
<box>There was an error processing a page. There was a problem reading
this document (114).</box>
He clicks OK and gets another message box that says:
<box>An unrecognized token '4w' was found.</box>
He clicks OK and the document attempts to open, with page 1 completely
empty (not the case in the original, where there are text, rules, and a
couple of images).
He then attempts to scroll to page 2. When he gets to page 2, another
message box opens:
<box>Unable to extract the embedded font 'CJLCKH+ARIAL,ITALIC'. Some
characters may not display or print correctly.</box>
He clicks OK and then page 2 opens with all the type replaced by black dots.
If he then forwards the document to me, I see the same behavior.
One other factoid, which is reported by an unreliable narrator and may
therefore be a red herring: I created one PDF by printing to Distiller
and then did not touch it. That is, I did not open it and resave it in
Acrobat, so it opens page view only, no bookmarks, no security.
Allegedly this document opened all right, but I haven't confirmed that
by retesting it directly with the customer.
It seems the problem is occurring somewhere in the vicinity of the Lotus
Notes server and that it may be related to the fact that I've turned on
security.
Has anyone seen this before; and, if so, do you have a fix?
Thanks,
Dick
