TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I don't see much enthusiasm among employers for slicing-and-dicing tech
writers into more than three levels: You are either a junior writer, a
senior writer, or a writer who manages other writers. Once you top out this
scale and start collecting annual raises, you become layoff-bait. When you
hit your salary plateau, the only path forward is to go into business for
yourself (or try to move to some non-techwriting role at your company).
I was alternately amused and offended by so-called "incentive" systems that
tried to make me jump through hoops for a 5% raise instead of a 3% raise.
The best raises I ever got were the ones I gave myself by moving to a better
job.
