Ah, the other great Friday tradition (besides silliness): Time for us old
fogeys to reminisce and tell the youngsters how tough we had it. ;-)
I remember using GEM Draw for graphics, WordPerfect (4.2, I think) for text,
and Ventura Publisher to assemble and dtp it all. This was before Xerox
bought Ventura.
GEM Draw and Ventura both ran "in" the GEM Desktop, which was a
(character-based) "GUI" on top of DOS. In theory, we should have been able
to run GEM Draw and Ventura simultaneously from the GEM Desktop and switch
between them. But Ventura's installation routine insisted on installing its
own runtime instance of the GEM Desktop, and we were never able to overcome
this problem.
Nevertheless, the GEM Desktop seemed superior in every way to the upstart
Windows 1.0 that came along somewhere in there.
I actually preferred GEM Draw to MacDraw because I could use it on a huge
(for that time) 14" monitor, not that stinkin' 9" display built into the
one-piece Macs. :-)
You kids today are spoiled. ;-)
