I don't think this is the equation at all. In my experience, some jobs are
well compensated, and others are not. Your excellent performance cannot
convert a low-compensated job into a high-compensated job - that is
yesterday's thinking. The social contract has changed. Nowadays, the way you
get a high-compensated job is to quit your low-compensated job.
The reward for going above and beyond what's required is exactly the same as
the reward for meeting minimum expectations: you maybe get to keep your job
