Are you using PDFWriter (a weak tool for creating PDFs) or the full Acrobat
Distiller? The latter is by far the better choice.
Actually, Adobe recommends the PDFMaker macro.
If Word was already on your system when you installed Acrobat, the Acrobat installer offered you a chance to install PDFMaker. If you accepted that offer, you'll see a two-button Acrobat toolbar in Word--the one on the left (or the corresponding command on the Acrobat menu in Word) is the best way to create PDF from a Word document.
That menu also contains a command for setting up the "distillation" process in a way that's specific to Word. It really makes it easy to get whatever results you want.
