You have to insert section breaks. Open the first file, go to the end, Click
Insert->Break and select from the bottom half of the window (Section break
types) Next page and click OK. In the new section, click View->Header and
Footer. The document will gray out and the header and footer of the document
will become active (they will appear as text with a dotted box around it)
and the Header and Footer toolbar typically floats on the document. On both
the header and footer you'll see text above the header and footer dotted box
that says "Same as Previous". This is evil and you must get rid of it. You
will see that there is one icon on the Header and Footer toolbar that is
selected. It has two pieces of paper and an arrow. This is the "Same as
Previous" icon. Click it. The Same as Previous text on the Header goes away.
Click the icon next to the "Same as Previous" icon (or scroll down to the
footer and click in it. The "Same as Previous" icon will be selected again.
Click the icon and the "Same as Previous" text above the footer will go away
as well.
Insert your next document. Save it. Repeat.

Hi Y'all:
OS: win xp
Word: Word 2000
OK, I have a bunch of separate word files that contain that chapter's
header and footer info, and I want to keep that info. However, since
they are all in separate files how do I put them in one file, keep
their unique header and footer info (the info associated with each
chapters) and generate a TOC so that it's one big book? Word just
frustrates me so that I want to pull out my nose hairs...Thanks, Bill!
