Re: What job did you have before you became a technical communicator?
If you had another career before you became a technical communicator, what
was it
R&D chemist in a medical diagnostic device manufacturing company.
and why did you decide to pursue technical communication?
I wanted to freelance, and work from home at least part of the time. The required lab and safety equipment was prohibitively expensive, zoning laws limited the kind of chemicals I could play with in my basement, and my insurance agent had a hissy fit.
The majority of my then-current job tasks as an industrial chemist involved writing project proposals, standard operating procedures, test plans, tutorials for new staff, technical reports, presentations for managers, and occasional journal articles. Technical communications seemed a logical career move. It also fits with my naturally obsessive-compulsive editing behavior and my passion for prettyprint.
