How was the PDF created? I ask because it could be
that the fonts were bitmapped in the PDF distillation
process, or that the PDF is of a scanned document.
Either way, text is now represented graphically and
not as embedded characters, thus you'll get junk
instead of what you see in the PDF when you save as
text/rtf or copy/paste. (Actually, not likely it was
scanned if you can, in fact, select text in the PDF...
more likely the fonts were bitmapped.)
