John Posada wonders: <<someone gave me an unopened copy of PageMaker
version4. Is it worth the effort of installing? If I want to upgrade to the
current PageMaker, does it recognize v4 as a suitable upgrade?>>
PageMaker 4 was what I considered the first really good version of the
software, so that's a pretty cool gift. However, I wouldn't bet that it
works particularly well with current operating systems, and would probably
need some patching to fix the initial-release bugs, and finding the patches
might be a bit challenging.
Fortunately, you can indeed upgrade to the most recent version from just
about any previous version, and for next to nothing in software terms
(something like US$99). Best of all, you don't actually have to install
version 4: all you need is the serial number. (Found this out when I
installed it on a laptop with no floppy drive!) Of course, this is software
from the bad old days, and figuring out the serial number is sometimes a
challenge: it's rarely clear which are ohs and which are zeros, and same
problem for 1's and l's.
