That's a bit of a stretch, at least to me...You can click anywhere on the
screen, constantly and forever, regardless of whether you're accomplishing
anything at all.
We use "click on" in the manuals where I work...we use it as as shorthand
for "click the left mouse button while your pointer is covering the
specified object on the screen to accomplish this task." In this context,
"Click on" is perfectly acceptable.
As far as I'm concerned, neither usage bothers me. If I had my druthers, I'd
simplify to just "click," but I adapt to the place where I work. Just
choose one and use it consistently.
