Dan: I learned this back in '94 when I approached a corporate decision maker with a demo of VAX inventory software and whipped out a slick little 40 pg shirt pocket sized manual (mostly pictures) for the operators I had distilled from over 400 pages of text someone else wrote. They bought the software and asked for 300 copies of the pocket manual and 1 copy of the original binder size manual. The pocket manuals were a profit bonus at $10 each.

I can't speak for the Best Buy types, but in commercial niche software,
printed manuals are often used as a sales tool. This is especially true when
a company is purchasing software for a large number of users with varying
skill levels: When a vendor brings high-quality, printed manuals to a sales
call, it can make all the difference. I've seen it happen.
