Well, it's the raised structure on the deck of a ship
that clears the usual height of waves that might break
across the deck (the poop "zone"). (I've been boating
since a kid and I married into a sailing/yaghting
family.)
I've never sailed, but I've read all the Patrick O'Brian stuff. His sailors are always worrying about being "pooped" (overwhelmed by a wave over the stern). Which would be rather amusing if it weren't so serious.
