I agree with your strategy of appealing to an authoritative style
guide. I always follow the appropriate style guide in these cases,
except where I or my users have really strong reasons for another
approach. I think it's unprofessional and a little dumb to do anything
else.
Your colleague has made a mistake; he may not correct it and may be
able to overrule you, but he made the mistake and you're doing fine.
