1. Select Tools|Options|View tab.
2. Select the Hidden Text check box.
3. Go to the page with the phantom index listing.
4. Find the field, identified by {curly brackets} and the letters XE.
5. Delete the field.
6. Repeat steps 1-5 for all phantom index listings.
7. Update the index.
8. Let me know if you still have problems.
