Jim Rapoza wrote a good eweek article. Pop-up ads, especially the kind
you cannot immediately close down, are extremely annoying. I installed
Ad-aware and Spybot (recommended by someone at Earthlink) on my machine
and the problem has nearly gone away for me, but I know it's still out
there.
How in the world people could come up with such a way to annoy others is
beyond me. I would tend to doubt that companies ever got back their
investments in this technology. And I believe they must have laid out
some pretty good bucks, judging from the relative sophistication of the
technology.
