TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
At the risk of blue-skying you, you can supposedly
store your content in disk files and databases,
and pull it all into the pre-formatted Word
document automatically whenever the stored content
changes. MS Office probably ships a query tool
that you can script with VBA. Fer sure you can
hit the databases using Excel. One way or
another, Word can get content stored elsewhere.
It sounds like you're missing the technique for
automating the transfer of BOMs, images, part
numbers, and items numbers from disk files or
databases into a Word document. From the 30,000
ft level, what you're trying to accomplish, as
others have indicated, is to construct your
document with references to the data instead of
actual data. It isn't so different from putting
pictures in a document by using links to the
images instead of embedding the images themselves
in the document.
If you've ever seen a big red X in a document
where an image is supposed to be, you'll
understand what I meant, about blue-sky.
Hopefully, all that OLE technology has been sorted
out and Word behaves well now.
