First and foremost, a style guide is a tool for ensuring consistency. You can be clear and
concise irrespective of the guide you use. However, if the AP guide doesn't provide guidance on
matters specific to the context in which you write, you should be able to provide examples to
demonstrate its deficiencies.
Put together an argument for using additional resources and pitch it to whomever makes the
rules. I'd be surprised if they balked at you using additional resources. You might have to
defer to AP style for some matters, but at least you'll have covered all bases.
