You might also do some searching on "gestalt laws of perception" and the
like. (As a one time art student, I had a lot of this drilled into my
head--to good effect, I hope.)

There has been a lot of formal study of gestalt perception over the years,
but I don't know how well people have linked it to computer UIs and web
stuff.

Hope you find the magic bullet, though.
