It occurred to me recently, and I realized that there's a pretty strong
correllation with my own experience over the years, that there's a pretty
reliable key to know whether or not you're going to be respected for your
skills and will fit in with the project team:
Does your manager take you to lunch on your first day on the job (or within
the first few days)? Bonus points for a group lunch with the team.
