He is off to a great start. I can add to the list as follows:
*The Careful Writer, by Theodore M Bernstein. Maybe long in the tooth
(copyright 1965), but useful and Bernstein was a news editor.
*The New Fowler's, by R W Burchfield. This is more recent and a classic.
*Dictionary of Contemporary Usage, by William and Mary Morris. Published in
1985, it used a usage panel of then famous (and then living) writers and
editors to offer their 2 cents on various words.
The new edition of Chicago (15) includes a section on usage, which is nice
and concise. They also have a good bibliography of about 20+ grammar and
usage books.
